David:
I'm not sure if you are clear or not on the way that DNS works with your
registrar.
Just to confirm:
--> You set up the primary DNS on your RAQ, just as you'd like it to be seen
across the entire Internet. Make sure you've got your A (host), MX (Mail
Exchanger), and NS (Name Server) records in there.
--> You ask your secondary to set up Secondary DNS service to pull from your
Primary (give him you're IP address).
I think you've got it this far. Now, in order for the change to show up on
your web-browser, you'll need to make the change with your regsitrar. You
see, you can make all the DNS entries you want, but until the root servers
are pointing to your DNS entries, they're not going to be visible.
If you have your websites already copied over to the RAQ, and your DNS is
properly configured, go ahead and make the change with your registrar. Note
that once you make the change, it will take up to 3 days (depending on the
registrar and your ISP) to take effect.
Note that I'm also new to the RAQ. I've been NT based for many years. We
got our first RAQ on Friday afternoon, and it's now in production, hosting
sites and e-mail for some of our customers. We didn't do anything special,
and nobody even noticed the switch.
The concepts here are not unique to RAQ servers, but rather basic to serving
your own website in general. Before you get too far, I would highly suggest
you learn as much as you can by asking questions, reading books, and
experimenting on your own. It's a lot less stressful to ask questions like
this in the hypothetical, rather than "Help! I made the changes, and now
nobody can see my website!" :)
