Atm I'm using Windows as my desktop. I do want to switch to Linux but
I've got some things I do in Windows (such as accounting for my ISP)
which can not be EASILY changed. So until then I'm using Windows
clients. Afaik Gnus is NOT available for Windows. Am I wrong? I'd
like to evaluate it.
I also need my email client to be capable of handling multiple
personalities (email addresses) at the same time, with automatic reply
default to the address at which the email came, and optional selection
of another. Can Gnus do that?

While I understand your point, I find that in practice it's not true.
I've NEVER gotten a piece of spam based on using "jblists" on mailing
lists (knock-on-wood). But addresses used on newsgroups draw spam quite
quickly.
