For this list, I keep my own archives on my own local (desktop) system. 
Makes searches much faster.  Yes, I suppose with a good newsreader I
could do that for a newsgroup, but not as easily.

Yes, there certainly are...

Interesting you should say that.  No one has posted to my "qube-users"
list in a week; I suppose most of us do want to stay in one place.

I hadn't thought of that.  Many of us have access to a news server. 
Many more of us have acces to Deja (but it's SLOOOOOOOOOW).  But email
IS much more universal.

Nor do I; there are occasional delays in posts propogating here, but
never more than a half-day (at the worst) in my experience.

Well, I was thinking about a private newsgroup, without propagation,
where whoever ran it could have a lot more control.

(I've got a news-server that ignores cancelbots, don't you <smile>?)
