What kind of newsreader are you using?
With my newsreader it's _very_ easy to archive a group for a specified
period of and time. I use Gnus, but I have used products like
Microsoft Outlook Express earlier - and they were just as easy.

I don't suggest a newsgroup as a "new" gathering place. I suggest that
the newsgroup would run a mailing list <> newsgroup gateway.
(i.e. messages posted on either the list or the group would appear
both places)

Using a newsserver that everyone has access to would solve that
problem. Sites like "sunsite.auc.dk" offers such newsgroups free
for everyone.
