But you will of course be running a newsserver on a Linux box, so you'll
be able to specify exactly how each group is treated.

There are more drawbacks - 
- fragmentation of resources
- not everybody has news access
- propagation.  I don't know what the "dreadful 2-3 delay" is,
  but all else being equal a mailing list is going to be faster
  and more reliable than netnews
- spam, supercedes, cancelbots, flame wars, trolls and interminable
  cross-posted OS-advocacy yawn-fests.
