Your system might be reading the partition/geometry information from what the previous BIOS understood. I'd suggest sticking the hard drive into a normal PC, creating a large partition (doesn't matter what filesystem), then put it back in the Cobalt and see if it sees it in its full glory. If so, you should be able to delete the partition and create a new one.
