To verify this, you could try watching your /var/log/maillog file and see if you're even getting connects from the user. Either watch that, or set up iptables to log everything on the incoming port in question to see what's up. That would at least let you know whether it's getting to you or not so you know whether something changed on your end or somewhere else.
