Jerry,

  To do that you would have to "copy" the mailbox first 
(cp username username.save) and then empty the mailbox. 
(>username)
then try sending a test message, check that it is delivered, then ask the 
customer to read mail, see if it works...
then copy the original mailbox back (cp username.save username) and ask them 
to check mail again....

You also might look at the "size" of the mailbox (ls -l username); sometimes 
really large mailboxes cause problems.  (the mail -f username should tell you 
how many messages are in the mailbox also).
