The files in /home/spool/mail should be -rw-------. While -rwx------
probably won't hurt, you don't have to execute mailboxes. However
-rwxrw---- creates a problem because any user of a given site could read
email for any other user of the same site.
However, if they were truly lrwxrwxrwx then they were linked to
something. What? And how did you unlink them?
Or were you by chance looking at /var/spool/mail? Files in
/var/spool/mail should be links to files of the same name in
/home/spool/mail. If you've changed the links in /var/spool/mail to
actual files then what you've done is put a lot of potentially huge
files onto your /var partition; that's NOT a good thing and will
probably eventually result in you running out of disk-space on /var.
