I downloaded a new copy using FTP from 

ftp.cobalt.sun.com/pub/packages/qube3/ml/Qube3-ml-Update-4.0.pkg

This version verified fine when I manually installed it from a local
machine this afternoon. It took maybe 15 minutes to actually install, part
of the time it was actually down (in singleuser I assume) - you can watch
the LCD display on the back. It then rebooted and everything now looks
fine.

Must be a buggy version out there somewhere. -> The one that BlueLinq
points at if you use the Web interface directly.

Thanks to those that helped me sort it out.
