Well, I am no attorney, but I don't think copyright infringement is relevant
since I nor anyone here is attempting to make their software our own. The
ISO is freely downloadable via public ftp, so in theory if you have
purchased one of Cobalt's products and you need to restore the OS AND there
is more than 1 choice of OS that will work on your unit I think there
really isn't much to discuss...again, I am not an attorney but it's not like
I am installing it on my Dell box..which wouldn't work anyway. But really,
what is the difference in downloading the 5.0 OS and placing it on a RaQ4 or
the 6.0 on a RaQ3? Would that be wrong? What if I place a 450Mhz CPU in a
RaQ3 and install the 6.0 OS, other than SN's, what is the difference?
Practically speaking of course.
Now, as far as selling OS restore CD's, which I do, I AM NOT selling the
software, it's not mine to sell, I am merely charging for my time and
materials to produce a CD that someone either lacks the knowledge or energy
to create. You are buying my CD, knowledge and labor, nothing more. If I was
trying to remarket the OS as Brad's New Fangled Blunix software, which I am
not, well that would be a different story.
Interesting discussion btw.....I have been curious about what the list might
think.
