Michael,I originally wrote that "DNS for Beginners" thing in answer to your post. I swear to you, it has the answers you're looking for. Have you read it? (And yes, setting the two up on one server is a baaaaaad idea. At the very worst, get free secondary DNS (for non-commercial sites) from www.granitecanyon.com or someone else that provides that service. Or pay the registrar (whomever you registerered your domains) for DNS for a month or two while you figure things out.
