Having gone through the cable modem thing, I much prefer the
previous recommendation to buy the Linksys Cable/DSL router
thing for about $150. Then it will get the DHCP address
dynamically, you can configure the secondary interface with
a static address headed to the little router, and all your
problems are over.
Theoretically
Switching the interfaces won't do you much good. There is a
difference between using the Qube as a DHCP *client* for your
cable modem and using it as a DHCP *server* for your network.
And the DHCP *server* will only assign addresses through the
primary interface according to the docs.
I only found DHCP (client) to work on the primary and not the secondary.
It always assumes that the internet network is attached to the primary.
And lan thus should be the secondary.
I have not the faintest Idea why DHCP (server) would not work on the secondary.
I am not near my qube to test this behaviour.
But I can verify it for you.
My home lan has enough connective material to test it.
(3 client PC's, 1 cable modem, 1 server with masquerading to the internet
over the cable modem and a notebook that I can connect with a cross cable
to the qube :-)
I will test it later. I also have the issue of getting my ISDN modem hooked
up to the cube to function :-)
That relies on the same functionality (setup)
