Actually, I should have mentioned that I had tried POP before SMTP. How would I find out whether Earthlink/Mindspring allow Port 25 traffic off their networks bound to external servers?

This is exactly what POP before SMTP is for.

And you're right.  Opening up your server to entire ISP isn't a good
idea.

Nor is it really possible, since you'd never find all the IP allocations
Earthlink uses (they use outsourced POPs, their own, and Mindspring's).

POP before SMTP (see the archives).

However, Earthlink may not allow port 25 traffic off their network
unless it originates off their own mailservers.  My guess is they
don't.  Check before the need becomes urgent.

Why does he need to use your mailserver?  Why can't he use Earthlink's?
