Additionally, RaQ2 and RaQ3 only have 1 master IDE channel ... when you add
a second hard drive to either of these boxen it has to be as an IDE slave.
With the way IDE works, the master and slave do not operate simultaneously.
RAID-1 (or any RAID) relies on the ability to be able to simultaneously
read/write data from all drives.
The RaQ4r has 2 master IDE channels (via 2 controllers). The RAID-1 is
setup so that each drive is an independent IDE master.
The only way to get RAID-1 running on a RaQ2 or RaQ3 is to have the
high-end model (RaQ2+, RaQ3i) and attach the drive via SCSI. This may
introduce timing problems since the drives use different bus interfaces.
