Copyright gives you a basis to sue; and in the U.S. is by statute,
whether or not you put the symbol on the work. But it doesn't
necessarily give you any tangible remedies. For that you have to spend
time and money in court, and you may still get nothing.
It all depends if Mike wants to be in the business of doing webhosting
and design or the business of suing...

In the U.S., anyway, you can use other people's copyrighted works inside
of your copyrighted work (by permission of course). Their copyright
covers their work; yours covers the part of the work that's yours. I
don't see any problem here.

Actually, I think he should let them know, nicely.
He should write them something like: "I found you're using some of my
graphics on your site without my permission. While I don't think that's
too ethical, I find it wonderful that those grpahics refer back to my
site; thanks for the leads!"
Let them search through their design, let their faces be red <smile>.
