Hi Glenn!

Bassi's package was great, but is aged. It will still provide some protection.

If you upgrade the f-prot it should be O.K., or?

No one has presented the idea, yet, to install MailScanner from source. It can be done, but not for the faint of heart, nor the rookie admin! These instructions worked for me: http://www.qitc.net/support/mailscanner/

Of course I did in my very first eMail ;) ->

- Some completely manual instructions are available. For example -> www.qitc.net/support/mailscanner

I think I can do this because it's a nice instruction and I'm not a complete newbie - my only thought is that *if* something goes "too deep" wrong my box is screwed up and de-installing isn't as easy as just uninstalling the pkg, eh? Got some wired Linux experiences :)

I have since upgraded my RaQ4 installations. I've managed a 4.2x version on the RaQ3. It was not easy and could really bugger your RaQ3 and sendmail, though.

The newer MailScanner versions 4.2x can use ClamAV, which is a great Open Source virus scanner.

You got it working with ClamAV? Or like described in the tutorial with F-Prot?

Hi Frank,

The 4.24 or better, I think, supports ClamAV. So, yes! I also run F-Prot.

The biggest hitch with installing it with the instruction set we've been referring to, is to beware the PERL idiosyncrasies. You can use CPAN, or to be safe(r), download the CPAN modules and install them one-by-one. CPAN on the Cobalt can suck someone unknowingly into upgrading their PERL and that is near suicide on the Cobalts.

BTW, The MailScanner author, Julian, claims that MailScanner integrates seamlessly with SpamAssassin. I've only tried on my Cobalts and never been able to get it to run any other way than on a per-user basis with an /etc/procmailrc call to spamc and a ~/.procmailrc call to spamd. This method is very inefficient, but I could not get the beast to work, otherwise. Also, another gotcha: RaQ3 sendmail has to be upgraded to get the 4.x MailScanner to run on it. Not the case on the RaQ4.

Cheers,
Glenn
