We had exactly the same system with a non-sendmail server, and we were
almost ready to give up on Exim, an otherwise excellent server
solution, because even the author couldn't help us.
It turned out to be that the server NIC (network interface card) and the
router weren't talking the same; one was talking full duplex, the
author half-duplex.
Even a reboot didn't help, but we ran a program (I can't remember which
one <frown>) to renegotiate eth0, and the problem went away after over
a week of hairpulling and a few lost clients.
