In my aliases file, it looks just like what you gave examples of below.
In addition, I have the following entry:

sys: admin, alanst@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

This is where all admin/system mail is directed to.

However, I never get any admin mail at my regular address. It only goes to
the internal admin email box. It seems to me the server has a problem of not
being able to send any mail to an address outside the server (with the
exception of pointing to a server's post office domain).

This obviously isn't supposed to be this way but I'm at a loss of where to
look for the root of the problem.

I'm not sure how the RaQ3 may be different than the RaQ2 in this respect
(I'm going to buy one soon so I can stop saying this), but I have no
problems doing what you *want* to do.  On my RaQ2 I have a mail account that
receives mail and forwards a copy to my yahoo account for backup purposes.

The line in /etc/aliases looks like this and it goes to the same domain name
you were having problems with:
swerby: myaccount@xxxxxxxxx, swerby

I also have other users who forward to external accounts without leaving a
copy on my server.  The entries look like this:
a011490003:     myaccount@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
a010760002:     myaccount@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I've *never* had to look up an MX record and alter an email address to get
it to work.  My gut tells me this isn't normal behavior for a RaQ3.
