Hmm, which RFC is it that requires abuse? The only requirement I'm
aware of is postmaster, and MANY sites out there break that and nobody
blocks them because of it. AFAIK abuse is only a common practice kind
of thing (only in the last couple of years).
Having been notified both onlist and offlist that there's no such RFC, I
decided to go ahead and defend myself onlist <smile>:
Check out RFC2142.
Specifically:
2. INVARIANTS
For well known names that are not related to specific protocols, only
the organization's top level domain name are required to be valid.
For example, if an Internet service provider's domain name is
COMPANY.COM, then the <ABUSE@xxxxxxxxxxx> address must be valid and
supported, even though the customers whose activity generates
complaints use hosts with more specific domain names like
SHELL1.COMPANY.COM. Note, however, that it is valid and encouraged
to support mailbox names for sub-domains, as appropriate.
and:
4. NETWORK OPERATIONS MAILBOX NAMES
Operations addresses are intended to provide recourse for customers,
providers and others who are experiencing difficulties with the
organization's Internet service.
MAILBOX AREA USAGE
----------- ---------------- ---------------------------
ABUSE Customer Relations Inappropriate public behaviour
NOC Network Operations Network infrastructure
SECURITY Network Security Security bulletins or queries
Of course I could be reading them wrong <smile>.
Who blocks people from disregarding 100% of the RFCs?
Disregarding 100% of RFCs? Probably nobody. For disregarding RFCs relating
to reporting of spam? My guess is quite a few people.
I doubt you could get cobalt.com blocked from much of anything because
of this.
If you read me in context, you probably realize I do come down in
moderation. I wouldn't try. I'm sorry I didn't make myself more clear.
