In a similar vein, http://uptime.arsdigita.com will monitor a given URL and
verify that it returns "success". If your needs are more advanced, it's
probably time to install something like sysmon (http://www.sysmon.org/) which
will also let you check a bunch of other services (e.g. mail, ftp) and is
flexible enough that you can get a single page if multiple services on a server
drop, avoiding the problems where a downed router causes the admin's pager to
do a slot-machine impression.
