Jim,
I've got a similar setup, and I use arkeia to backup all my stuff.
(www.arkeia.com) They have a light version available, which is free. The
only difference is the freebee will only backup to tape (not disk) and
it is limited to two clients.

You could install arkeia server on the SuSe box, and arkeia clients on
your RaQs (which it already should be, if you look under backup in your
control panel). On mine, I do a full system backup once a week, and a
data only backup nightly. Arkeia keeps track of everything in a
database, so if I ever need to restore anything, I tell it what file(s)
I want, the timeframe they were backed up, and arkeia tells me what tape
to go and get. Arkeia will also work with databases like mySQL
installed.

thanks for the info. Definitely another option that doesn't sound too difficult to set up.

One question is what happens if the SuSe box crashes.. is the database then possibly lost? -which leads to how you would restore in that case. (if you have a quick answer.. otherwise maybe I'll google for some Arkeia docs.) Which leads to: Can you have the SuSe or server Arkeia backup itself as well to tape, as it is backing up the clients?

Another question is for whole system backups: What exactly are you backing up here? / , /var, and /home? I suppose it has excludes, I'll search on it.
