If I'm testing a drive there is a seagate utility I use which verifies 100%
of the drives media - I work on the basis that if it passes this it's a good
drive!
It does take a few days to run on a big drive and is 100% destructive to the
data.
sgfmt4.exe is the file name (had it a while so it may have been updated), it
came off the seagate website ages ago.
I've used it on other manufacturers drives loads of times with no issues.
