[cobalt-users] erasing /var/log

Hi everybody,

I'm getting "The filesystem [/var] is getting very full" message as /var is
77% used.
Looking into /var I noticed that logs are located in here, as follows:

-rw------- 1 root root 3063180 Oct 31 13:21 maillog
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 1779840 Oct 31 13:10 wtmp
-rw------- 1 root root 1331886 Oct 31 04:36 maillog.1.gz
-rw------- 1 root root 967514 Oct 31 13:20 messages
---------- 1 root nobody 717332 Oct 31 04:27 xferlog.1
-rw------- 1 root root 472322 Oct 31 13:15 cron
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 330224 Oct 22 03:11 kernel.1.gz
-rw------- 1 root root 280278 Oct 31 13:21 secure
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 194180 Oct 31 13:10 lastlog
-rw------- 1 root root 123978 Sep 22 04:21 auth.1.gz
-rw------- 1 root root 121276 Oct 31 04:32 secure.1.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 111863 Oct 31 11:00 kernel
-rw------- 1 root root 87623 Oct 30 04:26 messages.1.gz
-rw------- 1 root root 85245 Sep 12 04:15 cron.1.gz
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 78966 Apr 3 2003 wtmp.1.gz

etc...

So the question is.
Can I erase safely some of the larger logs ? like maillog, wtmp, maillog1.gz
and messages
Will this really help getting more space or I outlooked some bigger files
which can be erased?

Thanks in advance
