On most of the coblats I have seen we don't have that var set by default...
just like mentioned above with wrapping their can be other problems...  I
strongly reccomend that if you need to edit the passwd file you use vi and
try to avoid using other (what could be very strange) editors...  While it
is possible to use other editors with vipw...  vi is rather expected...
Trust me... Life can suck when you break your passwd file :)
