We have found that this happens when the user interrupts the mail download.
I just delete the .user.pop file in /var/spool/mail/ but beware that you
will often get a corrupted mail drop doing this and then the user looses all
the mail they haven't yet downloaded.

Dave,
I am having the SAME problem with a user and I went so far as to delete the
account in Microsoft Outlook (because that is of course where I first
expected the problem to be <BG>) and then recreated it. Then I did the same
thing on our Qube 3 and they still got the error. So I created a "temp"
account to test that it definitely was not Microsoft and that works fine.
That was almost a week ago and I had spaced it until I saw this so that
"certain amount of time" must be a doozie :-)
Is it safe to just delete this file ?
Thanks,
Chuck

Try using ls -a That will show you all the hidden files in the folder. I've
noticed this happens if a person is in the middle of downloading their email
and then cancels the download. The server creates this lock file and wont
let them back in a for a few minutes. I believe the file does get deleted
after a certain amount of time. Hope this helps.
