I doubt it was a malfunction, but rather the end of Osirusoft.

Sure, it wasn't appropriate for osirusoft to take the steps they took to get
users to stop using their service, but it did ensure that everyone stopped
quickly. Had they just discontinued the service as it was, I'm certain there
would be tons of servers still trying to query their servers. They probably
should have posted notices on their site and "got the word around" before
ceasing services or taking such a drastic step, but for some reason they
chose to go another route.
