You can also do it from the front panel. On boot, hold down "S" like you
have been doing. When you get the LCD menu options, press "S" again to
scroll through until you find the "configure boot" option. Press "E", and it
says "select default: from disk" and "E" again to set to boot from disk, and
it will retain the setting.

I don't know why it does this, but it seems random. I've had it happen on
several raq's and not at all on others.
