Jackie,
There are several factors that could be causing
this to happen:
#1: There is a maximum 'message size' in the GUI
on the RaQ4's under Services - Email Server that normally
limit messages (including attachments) to 5MB as a
default. You can change this, but it does run the
risk of someone jamming large files of spam through
your RaQ and slowing it down beyond recognition, as I've
found out previously.
#2: You need more info from the Customer as to
'timing out'. This provides details as to where the
transmission is failing, and can point to the cause.
#3: Need to determine what program (Outlook, etc.)
is being used to know where to find the error that leads
the Customer to believe it's timing out.
#4: Broadband is no better than 56K, it's only as
fast as the slowest link between all the points. If they
are on a separated backbone connection from your RaQ,
then it's possible the link between is timing out trying
to transfer an e-mail of that size. Cable is notorious
vs. DSL connections in the US, due to the fact it's
all users within a range on one server funneling it all
back and forth. DSL connections are direct, so there's
usually not a drop-out as far as timing goes.
#5: There may be limits on the size of the e-mail
allowed by the Broadband company, or whomever they may
be using for their e-mail services if it's not in-house.
Most limit transmissions to no more than 5MB total,
including attachments.
#6: Your own Hosting/NOC housing the RaQ may have
limits in place as well, if you don't have it in-house
and connected to a broadband setup directly.
Possible solution: If they're that size, you may
want to find a way for that Customer to upload the files
via FTP and allow the receiver to pull them down as they
need them. They could also possibly upload them to the
webspace they get as part of their User account and make
an HTML page with links to each PDF that would allow
the receiver to grab them directly, eliminating the
e-mail bottleneck.
