that link suggests moving the files and pointing to them with a symlink.
Ok, sounds like a solution.

Would I need to shut anything down first (httpd etc.?)

The largest file has records from Feb 2003 to the current time.
I really don't need to keep that much data on user quotas,
hence my asking if I can zero them out without harming anything.

The files get backed up, out of the box, routinely.
