Use mailq to see the quene and find out the message number

then /usr/sbin/sendmail -v -qI# (replacing the # with the message number).
This will connect up showing you the smtp conversation. It gives you a very
good idea whether to remove the entry because it is a permanent error (eg:
no route to host or no domain) or whether to leave it in the queue because
it probably is a temporary error (ie: smtp service not available).

To remove it

cd /var/spool/mqueue/q# where # is the queue number
there will be a pair of files there with that number. Delete them. The
message is now gone. Verify with mailq.
