I have notes on what I did some place. The main advantage to gnutar is
that you can restore data to and move it from almost any machine on
your network. dump is actually much more machine specific.

Amanda is really scripts that are running tar, dump, etc. They have
good notes on how to set it up so the remote commands can be properly
executed by the right user with the right file permission. My biggest
problem is getting every machine to pass both reverse name resolution
with my DNS set up. The instructions on the amanda web pages and
mailing list are pretty good. I think I posted most of my notes. I
found it easier to simply build from the tarball instead of using the
rpms. YMMV.
