If it's "completely dead to the network" how did you read /var/log/messages?

VM is the Virtual Memory handler, something must be eating memory.
I read on the net that there was a bug in kernel 2.2.16, maybe cobalt put a 
bad kernel in there.
The system should always be able to swap memory out. It sure sounds like a 
kernel problem.
