John, I have't made the time to pursue that, but others have. See
http://www.debian.org/ports/mips/ and
http://devel.alal.com/mailman/listinfo/cobalt-22 for Debian on mips. I read
the cobalt-22 list occasionally and some have had good success. Various
people post to cobalt-developers from time to time too on the subject so you
may want to join that list or search its archives at
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=cobalt-developers (my favorite searchable
archive site, YMMV).
