Two possible solutions:
1) in the .htaccess file, you make have the path wrong or something
mispelled. It should be a long path like:
AuthUserFile /home/sites/sitename/web/directory/.htpasswd
2) In the Raq550, an update caused the "AuthPAM_Enabled" line to be a
problem. By removing this line or remming it out by adding "# " in
front of it allowed it to work.
