Good grief, don't come down on me with the wrath of the archive search! I finally found the answer there.. the file is "too big" ?? and you need to wget it to your raq and open it from there. Too many mysql install messages there that didn't have the answer, but finally found one that did. Thanks!

Just to add my say Jim, I'd recommend doing the wget into the /home/packages for every patch you install, basically because there are too many problems known with browser uploads, etc.
Plus you can tell wget to run in the background while you make a cuppa ;)

Thanks Andy!

I'm still confused on whether I have a working install. My job I wear many hats and so was juggling many balls when trying install mysql. So I wasn't entirely focused.

I wget'd the package to /home/packages and then when I went to the Cobalt GUI 'Install Software' page there was the package sitting in the Upload box. Is that an automatic feature when a package is sitting in that directory? I checked 'install this package' and, not paying attention to what was in the list of installed packages (it wasn't there before the whole process began. I made sure of that.), got a message that the mysql was already installed. So I don't know if the earlier attempt from using the pkgmaster url worked or what. Regardless, the package shows in the list now.

But, when reviewing mysql documents it states the directory should be in /usr/local/mysql. Well, that doesn't exist. When I do a

rpm -qa |grep mysql

(pardon if syntax is wrong- this is from memory, but I did it according to instructions from the archives so think I had it right then), it returns only the prompt.

I had previously installed webmin which looks like it installs mysql? So I'm confused whether I can use that installation.. Going into webmin it seems like it is configurable and all. I was trying to install mysql for a community calendar software
( http://open.appideas.com/Calendar/)
that wants php and mysql installed. Guess I can go ahead and try it.
(If anyone has a better suggestion, go ahead.)

ps: I haven't read the manual yet so if that irritates anyone, please just delete this. I only have little time and would love to read the book, but that can only come later. I'm still struggling to learn linux admin.
