Re: [cobalt-users] Nagging How to in Linux vs. Windows question.. Not specifically a Cobalt only ??

"ifconfig -a" will give you a list of all interfaces, and if they have addresses, it'll show them. its basically the same as ipconfig /all.

If you want to /release /renew (i.e. refresh dhcp assignment), it all really depends on the distrib, the interface down/up scripts, and the dhcp client used.

Under debian, its typically 'ifdown -a; ifup -a'.

Its been years since I've needed to do it under redhat/cobalt, but at a quick glance there are simular scripts under /etc/sysconfig.

Man pages are your friend.

Not specifically a Cobalt only ??

What I'm referring to is a Linux version of the Windows command:

IPCONFIG /ALL /RELEASE /RENEW (Windows NT/2000/XP)

or

WINIPCFG (Windows 9x/ME)

The reason Im interested in finding the Linux variation is so that I can
easily and quickly determine a Linux box's IP/Subnet/Gateway/DNS
assignments. It would also be nice to be know how to be able to
release/renew a DHCP assigned address from a command prompt.

Obviously I don't have the depth of knowledge with Linux that many of
you
have.. but I'm working on it.
