This may be just a touch off topic, but it may help some of us, in option 3
above, you say "try a direct connect cross over cable".

Question, is there a difference between a crossover cable and a patch cable?
I notice in my PC parts catalog, they are listed in 2 places, 1 for patch
and another for cross over, but both being the same price.

At a well known national COMP(usa)uter store that will remain nameless, I
asked the same question and 3 clerks/tech's were unable to answer that
question and was hoping someone here could, at least for the archives.
