most of the time, nothing is appearing in the logs.
i did spot '-ERR POP hangup' and '-ERR SIGHUP or SIGPIPE flagged'

he's getting a 'no socket' error. he doesn't know if he has a firewall or
not (exactly!).
he's very un-computer literate which is half the problem...
