If it happens again, lets try restarting sendmail and see if that fixes it.
/etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail restart
If that doen't fix it try restarting inet
/etc/rc.d/init.d/inet restart
If that doesn't fix it, I guess you'll have to reboot.
Its just that the 'reboot' fix is really doing a start on the culprit process.
