stumbled onto it... within the .htaccess file, I replaced the line
require group <group#>
with
Require valid-user

Now any legitimate user can see the stats. the only drawback is that now any
user can see any other site's stats, although that isnt a very big deal
since nobody really knows who else is physically on that server.
