That's an alternative. It still requires moving the databases to /home so
whether a symbolic link is easier or better than starting MySQL with the
true data directory location is a matter of preference. I have reasons I
prefer my solution, including consistency and internal backup/recovery
procedures. I usually install MySQL to /home/mysql and set the data
directory to /home/mysql/data. YMMV.

That symbolic link is set by default by Sun.
