I disagree; I think if we're going to be "compliant", we need to be
"compliant". There's a good explanation of netiquette as it refers to
sigs, and the underlying RFC, at
"http://www.uwasa.fi/~ts/http/signatur.html".
For those purists who will argue the referred to RFC is relevant only
for usenet news, I'll point out that newsgroups and email lists serve
basically the same purpose, and as newsgroups have become overrun with
spam over the past few years they've been in many cases supplanted by
mailing lists. I'm also quite happy to introduce a new RFC if necessary
<smile>.
Effective immediately I've reduced my own sig to four lines. I'm sure
you can as well, Bruce <smile>, since the line's can be up to <> 80
characters.
Everyone should note that sigs should be preceeded by "-- " (hyphen,
hyphen, space) on a line of it's own, and that the separator is NOT
counted as one of the four lines.
Since the separator IS used by much newsgroup and mailing list software
as a delimeter, if your software isn't able to follow the two hyphens
with a space, that's no excuse for anything except changing software
<smile>.
