And if you get a company smaller than an enormous corporate entity that says
they can run your local loop, run away quickly. They will offer plenty of
apologies for your downtime. Just look for a smaller independent isp that
works with the big clec, and see if you can find an installation special.
Look around for something like yipes.com which is a scalable pipe with fiber
in your office, or a commercial cable connection which has the same
advantages. The adv that you can order more bandwidth on demand, even pay
by the day if you know that there's a rush coming on (ie. $80 for one day of
5 mbps pipe). The in is expensive though with yipes. Don't know about
cable, but know an isp who does cable and has much love.
Personally, I highly recommend co-lo. I am on a nice dual t3 network with
all the bells and whistles. I have 0 downtime and a nice firewall
protecting the box (look for a place using netfilter). On top of all that,
my machine is also secure there, and they have a netbots raq that maintains
24 hour audio (in case something falls)/video (u can imagine) surveillance.
Good luck
