Totally unnecessary.  We've implemented this for a few thousand sites,
no small number on RaQs.

Also not necessary, and probably not a good idea.

That does work.  It works well, it's EXACTLY what CNAME was designed for
(so if the location of www gets changed you don't have to change the
location of ftp), and it's absolutely ALL you need to do; all you should
do.

And if you don't have either a CNAME or an A record for ftp, it won't
ever work no matter what else you do.
