Last time I checked, only mutt leaves mail in place. pine and elm set up mail directories in joe's homedir. joe needs to have shell access aswell, btw. This approach of course doesn't catch TCP/IP troubles.

Some mailclients (saw this in old Eudora, don't know about recent mail clients) actually show that the mail in question has been read already.
