To add an alias using the gui you put in only the left side of the
address, not the complete address.

For example, if I want jblists@xxxxxxxxxxxxx to also accept email for
george@xxxxxxxxxxxxx, I'd only put "george" into the gui.

The catchall, host.domain.com, is the only exception.  Note that while
the host is almost always www, it isn't always, and doesn't need to be.
