On Friday, I was minding my own business at work when my wife called and
commented that she was getting errors while sending mail. She has Microsoft
Outlook connecting to our cube3. The cube serves family and a couple of
friends. She sent mail out with the usual instant response from the cube and
then suddenly she couldn't get any response. I logged into the cube from
work via the web interface and all looked ok. CPU lightly loaded, network
lightly loaded, active monitor says everything working.
When I got home, I checked and indeed outlook is timing out when attempting
to smtp. Pop works instantly.
Spend several hours looking at the archives, both at the cobalt site and in
the users group archives. DNS access seems to be fast (indeed we use IP
addresses in the server configuration on the windows box),
Some background, our small home network is connected to our corporate network
via a T1 and both sit behind a corporate firewall. The only access allowed
to the cube from the outside world is mail and web. All other ports are
closed. We use the corporate dns, not the cube dns.
I've stopped and restarted the smtp server. Indeed one note in the archive
suggested rebooting and that didn't help.
Where do I go from here?
One last thing, running top shows a couple of things I don't recognize...
I've got a user called nobody running thttpd-phoenix and several processes
running called pafnanny.
Help??
