G'day Jeff,

My DSL service is with the consumer ISP unit of the telco -- there are
no other DSL providers here to choose from, aside from the bu$ine$$ IP
services unit of the same telco.

Yes, the fixed IP via DHCP is rather hokey.  But, it is about 1/7th the
cost of the proper static IP DSL service.  This tradeoff is acceptable
for my intended use of the connection for my backup server.  No, I would
not think anyone would seriously consider this for any kind of
commercial hosting, and it will definitely not replace the colocation
service for my main server.  But, for a few extra bucks per month over
the dynamic IP DSL connection I would have here anyway, I have a live
backup server that *could* be utilized in an emergency.

That is, if the telco actually did activate the fixed IP DSL service for
me...  I'm on an indeterminate waiting list for an available port.
