[cobalt-users] "Cannot convert from vanilla unix to shadow password"

One of my RaQ3s has been restored after a total wreck (the password lists were lost and had to be recreated from the GUI database).
Everything was more or less working but I was having problems trying to create some users that weren't on the GUI but apparently still existed on the server.
I did a _really thorough_ search of the archives (thanks for the pointers, Dan!) and decided to use the meta-verify.pl script: 


    wget ftp://ftp.cobaltnet.com/pub/users/duncan/raq3/meta-verify.pl
    perl /home/meta-verify.pl -u -a
    perl /home/meta-verify.pl -u -i
    perl /home/meta-verify.pl -s -a
    perl /home/meta-verify.pl -s -i


I also deleted the locks and did this:


   cp /etc/gshadow gshadow.bak
   rm gshadow
   grpconv
It corrected a lot of errors on the databases, but couldn't correct the "Cannot convert from vanilla unix to shadow password" error message when trying to modify some users. Moreover, it created this problem for users that were fine.
I am completely stuck. It's been almost one with with constant problems with the server. The techs at my hosting company weren't of any help (in fact they told me it was impossible to restore the password lists).
I hired a great tech that I met through this list and he fixed a lot of things, but he's just disappeared for more than 30 hours now and my customers are about to sue me.
I'd appreciate any help and I'm also willing to hire the best tech that's out there if I can get my server back on track today. Please contact me off-list for that.
